It’s nearly that time of the year when everyone turns a little bit Irish, and with over 80 million people worldwide claiming an ancestral connection to Ireland it is no wonder why!

But, have you ever wondered why St. Patrick’s Day is Ireland’s biggest national holiday?

Or why everyone likes to celebrate it so much?

Here are some facts you might not know about everyone’s favorite day of the year!

  1. Patrick wasn’t Irish
  1. He was captured by pirates

When St. Patrick was 16, he was captured by pirates and taken to Ireland where he lived as a slave for 6 years before escaping and returning to his family. After becoming a cleric, he returned to Ireland where he served as a bishop.

  1. His name wasn’t Patrick

According to Irish legend, St. Patrick’s birth name was actually Maewyn Succat, but he changed it to Patricius after becoming a priest.

  1. His color was blue

Historians say that St. Patrick’s color was blue, not green. The use of green came about in the 1798 Irish Rebellion when the clover became a symbol of nationalism and the wearing of green became a regular practice.

  1. He chased all the snakes away

Irish legend has it that St. Patrick drove all of the snakes out of Ireland when he arrived.
